If you’ve ever been in a location without Wi-Fi, you might know how annoying it is to try to post that vacation picture or respond to an important email. Fortunately, the East Lansing Public Library now has hotspot portable Wi-Fi devices that can be rented out by patrons.

March is National Reading Month, which East Lansing Public Library (ELPL) Youth Librarian, Eva Weihl, describes as “an initiative that encourages educators, parents, and communities to highlight the importance of reading and literacy in order to help to grow strong, passionate readers.”

Weihl notes that different communities and organizations celebrate the month differently, and that it provides “a great opportunity to highlight literacy through some fun new programs and offerings.”

The Hatch: Fueling Student Entrepreneurship

The Hatch is a space designed to aid undergraduate Michigan State University students in their entrepreneurial endeavors. Located on the third floor of 325 E. Grand River Avenue, Suite 345, the space gives students 24 hour access to the co-working space to utilize their various resources and to start their businesses.

The holiday sale is where 3rd grade Girl Scouts are selling homemade crafts for under $4! It will happen on Tuesday the 15th after school until 7:00PM and it will also be happening on Wednesday the 16th at 8:00 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. and the last day is Thursday the 17th  at 8:00AM to 8:45AM.

On Saturday, August 8, I attended a concert that was geographically close and yet environmentally far from East Lansing’s Great Lakes Folk Festival and the neighboring Lansing Jazz Fest.

In the shadows of these competing annual mainstays, another day-long musical event was taking place in a quiet Hunter Park-adjacent Lansing neighborhood: the Contemporary Music Potluck (CMP).

This past week, East Lansing experienced two “secure in place” orders from the local police, including one on Monday involving the East Lansing Public Schools and another on Tuesday at MSU. What trips these orders? What do “secure in place” and “lockdown” orders really mean?

To find out, I talked to Lieutenant Steve Gonzalez of the East Lansing Police Department (ELPD).

Saturday is a big day for the “Gear Girls”. This local, all-girl competitive robotics team is geared up to compete November 8 in a Regional Qualifier against 29 other teams for the chance to go on to the state First Lego League competition.

With the help of the East Lansing Public Library (ELPL), East Lansing is offering a hot spot for creative minds to channel their artistic desires to design, create, and produce, in a collaborative space known as a maker studio or makerspace. On October 1, the ELPL hosted the Grand Opening of the ELPL 2.0 Maker Studio – a pop-up makerspace located on the second floor of the East Lansing Marriott at University Place.
