ASK ELi: Who Funded Diane Goddeeris' Campaign?

The question this week: Who funded Diane Goddeeris’ last campaign for City Council?

The quick answer: Nobody. Goddeeris raised no money and spent no money on her last campaign (for November 2011). If you want to see a direct comparison of the campaign financing for all five of our current City Council members, click here.

Some background: Four weeks ago, we answered a reader’s inquiry about who funded Susan Woods’ campaign for City Council. In response, readers asked us to also examine and report who funded the other current Councilmembers’ campaigns. I asked our Managing Editor Ann Nichols to roll a die to determine which campaign I’d review next. We have now reviewed all five current Council members’ campaigns, including Ruth Beier’s, Nathan Triplett’s, and Kathy Boyle’s.

Goddeeris was first elected to City Council in November of 2007 after being appointed in October 2006. She was elected by Council to Mayor Pro Tem from 2007-2011, re-elected by the voters in November of 2011, and elected by Council to be Mayor in November of 2011. She has not said whether she will be running for reelection in November of this year. We looked here only at the campaign documents from the cycle of Goddeeris’ most recent completed campaign in order to have a parallel comparison to what we did with our other campaign finance reviews.

How I investigated the answer: I went to the Ingham County Clerk elections website and clicked on “campaign finance report search” and then searched under Goddeeris’ name. Doing so gave me all the correspondence about her campaign. (You can do this with any candidate.)

What the campaign finance reports show: Again, Goddeeris raised no money and spent no money on her last campaign (for November 2011).
