Capital City Comic Con Returns August 27th

The second annual Capital City Comic Con will take place tomorrow, Saturday, August 27, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Breslin Center, located on the campus of Michigan State University.

James Curtis, co-founder and co-owner of Capital City Comic Con, says they will have about 80 artists, exhibitors, clubs, and special guests. He says they are anticipating anywhere from 1,500 to 2,000 people at the Con.

When asked to describe what to expect at Comic Con for someone who has never gone, Curtis said “Sensory overload comes to mind. But truly, there is so much to see and experience, and micro moments of wonder that you’ll miss if you’re not looking. Expect to see amazing artists at work, fabulous costumes, extensive collections of comics, and people reveling in their shared passions. That is where Comic Con really shines.”

Curtis says Greater Lansing’s first Comic Convention was established in 2015 and debuted at Haslett High School, hosting nearly 1,000 participants in its inaugural year. There are thriving annual conventions within driving distance from Lansing, but Curtis says that the founders found themselves constantly asking “Why not Lansing?” and that led them to come together “…with a vision to build a convention for our Lansing Community - something that each of us is passionate about.”

Curtis says “…we’ve created something that’s entirely our own, and we’re very proud of the overwhelming support we’re receiving as we grow.”

When asked how this year’s Comic Con would be different than in the past Curtis explained that “for the first time we will have panel presentations for fans and aspiring artists alike to learn from the masters.”

This year the Con has partnered with The Reading People at the Capital Area Literacy Coalition to help combat the issue of illiteracy. The organization helps children and adults in the Capital area and throughout the state of Michigan learn to read, write, and speak English. One dollar for every ticket sold will go to the organization.

Curtis says “In addition, we’ve also awarded our first Capital City Comic Con Original Art Scholarship in Comic Studies to Grace Fish, a student at Michigan State University, who has created the official art for this year’s convention which you will see everywhere.”

Curtis also notes “We encourage guests to take advantage of the advance ticket sale, where they can save on their tickets and skip the general admission line.” Presale tickets are $10, at-door tickets are $12 and children five and under are free.
