East Lansing Council Member Jessy Gregg will begin holding regular “office hours” at the East Lansing Public Library starting with a drop-in session from 1 to 4 p.m. this Friday, Jan. 24.

New to the Council, Gregg was the top vote-getter in the most recent election, with more than 65 percent of voters giving her one of their three available votes.

Gregg tells ELi that the main reason she is offering these sessions is that she’s finding it challenging to manage all the requests she is getting for meetings with constituents, particularly as she is also in the first-year of operating her new downtown business, Seams.

“I’m just trying to condense outside meetings into organized blocks of time,” she explained in an interview last night before Planning Commission, for which she serves as the Council’s liaison.

“Hopefully this will cut down on the [meetings happening] early mornings and weekends, time that I would prefer to keep dedicated to my family.” Gregg has three children currently attending East Lansing Public Schools.

Asked what she’s hoping for tomorrow, she responded, “I hope somebody comes! There’s always that ‘nobody’s coming to my party’ moment. Hopefully people feel comfortable approaching me because I’ve invited them to do so.”

Gregg thinks that for some people this will feel like a more comfortable environment than a Council meeting or even a coffee shop. She said the library’s director, Kristin Shelley, had been amenable to the idea.

“And if nobody comes,” said Gregg, “I’ll spend three hours catching up on my email.”

Gregg’s “office hours” are scheduled for 1 to 4 p.m. on the following Fridays: Jan. 24, Feb. 14, Feb. 28, March 13 and March 27. No appointment is required, and more information is available at Gregg’s Facebook page.
