Early in the morning of Saturday, June 20, a fatal collision occurred at the intersection of Durand Street and Albert Avenue, a residential section of the Bailey neighborhood. At the request of an ELi reader, I talked today with ELPD’s Lieutenant Steve Gonzalez to get more details.

The accident occurred at 1:47 am. A motorcycle going north on Durand Street and driven by 24-year-old Levi Light of Lansing collided with a passenger van going east on Albert Avenue. The van had the right of way, and according to Gonzalez, it is not yet clear if Light stopped at the stop sign on Durand and proceeded after stopping, or whether he failed to stop.

The motorcycle and the van collided. Light was wearing a helmet but died at the scene. His passenger, 22-year-old Reba Williams of Ypsilanti, was not wearing a helmet, and she also died at the scene.

The driver of the van “did not sustain any life threatening injuries” according to ELPD. Gonzalez tells me he does not expect any charges to be filed against the driver of the van. He expects ELPD will find that Light caused the accident.
