The City of East Lansing is now offering residents opportunities to recycle holiday lights and also to exchange less efficient light sets for environmentally-friendly LED sets.
According to a press release from the city, holiday light recycling works like this: "Residents can drop off holiday lights for recycling in specially-marked containers inside the Department of Public Works, 1800 E. State Road, or the East Lansing Hannah Community Center, 819 Abbot Road. Lights can also be placed in curbside recycling bins on a resident’s normal collection day."
The light exchange program is run in conjunction with the Board of Water and Light (BWL), and is available to all BWL customers. According to the City's release, "BWL customers can exchange old, working incandescent holiday lights for a new box of LED lights. The exchange will take place Nov. 15-30 while supplies last. BWL customers must bring in their current residential electric bill and a valid ID to participate. The exchange is limited to two boxes of LED lights per household. However, there is no limit on the number of incandescent lights that can be dropped off for recycling. Households that participated in the exchange in previous years may participate again."
To do an exchange, simply visit any of the following three locations on or before November 30 during normal business hours:
