The City’s Department of Public Works is rolling out the orange barrels once again this week, this time in the 100 block of West Grand River Avenue, just west of Abbot Road.

This week’s closures, which started today, will affect the left and center lanes. Earlier today traffic in the right lane was backed up from Abbot all the way east to Bailey Street.

Next week the center and right lanes will be closed.

All three lanes will be open this weekend when Michigan State University hosts the University of Illinois in a Big Ten football game with a scheduled kickoff for 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

The lane closures are needed for underground utility work related to the ongoing construction of both The Abbot and The Graduate hotel, just east of Peoples Church. This past weekend infrastructure work to establish a water main connection at the Albert Avenue-Abbot Road intersection was completed, and that intersection was successfully repaved.

“The work went very well Friday,” said City engineering administrator Nicole MacPherson. “The crews finished up by 6 p.m., and the intersection was reopened earlier than we had planned.”
