Massive EL Recycling Opportunity May 30

The big, annual East Lansing recycling event, known now as “Recycle! East Lansing,” will take place this year on Saturday, May 30. Formerly known as “Project Pride,” this event provides opportunities to dispose of lots of common household items in a relatively environmentally-responsible fashion. Items that are in good condition may be reused, and the rest will be recycled to the extent possible.

The City of East Lansing is distributing information about the event now so that residents can prepare for the event—including arranging special curbside pick-up if they are seniors and/or persons with disabilities. The City is also hoping people willing to volunteer to help will get in touch now. (More information on volunteering is available below.)

According to the City, “Items that will be accepted free of charge include: small appliances; batteries (all kinds); bikes; books; cell phones; clothing; corrugated cardboard; dehumidifiers, freezers and refrigerators (free Freon removal); electronics (computer systems, accessories, audio/video equipment, handheld devices and office equipment); eye glasses; Polystyrene (no packing peanuts); usable furniture; household items (i.e. utensils); lawn mowers; medications and prescriptions (black out personal information); pillows and blankets; plastics #1-7; scrap metal; stoves; televisions; working vacuum cleaners; and washers and dryers. A $25 rebate will be given to Lansing Board of Water & Light customers who recycle working room air conditioners or dehumidifiers (limit of two per household).”

The event will run from 8 am to 3 pm at the Abbott Center, located at1400-1500 Abbot Road. (That’s just north of Reno’s on the east side of Abbot Road.) According to the City’s press release, “East Lansing residents are eligible to participate and are required to bring proof of residency. It is a rain-or-shine event.”

If you are a senior and/or a person with a disability, you can schedule a collection of your items by calling the Prime Time Seniors’ Program at 517-337-1113. You will need to do this by May 27 and you will need have all your items at the curb ready for pick-up on May 30.
