Mayor Triplett Running for Re-Election
Ann Nichols
East Lansing Mayor Nathan Triplett has announced his re-election campaign for East Lansing City Council. Triplett did not respond to an interview request from a student reporter for this piece and did not speak to me on the record, so I have based it on information taken from his campaign materials.
The election, which will be held on November 3rd, will decide who fills the three seats currently held by Triplett, Mayor Pro Tem Diane Goddeeris, and Council Member Kathleen Boyle. Council members serve for four-year terms. In the meeting immediately following election results, Council members elect who among them will serve as Mayor and Mayor Pro Tem.
Triplett has been a member of Council since 2007, and Mayor since 2013. According to his campaign site, he is running for re-election because he wants to “secure our community’s financial future,” “promote smart growth and sustainable development,” “protect City services and our quality of life,” “build a welcoming community for all” and “foster positive community-University relations & regional cooperation.”
Triplett held a kick-off campaign fundraiser last Thursday, March 26, at Beggar’s Banquet. According to campaign literature, Host Committee members for the event included over 80 individuals or couples. The Host Committee included many prominent local Democrats such as former State Senator Gretchen Whitmer, State Senator Curtis Hertel, Jr., State Representative (and former East Lansing mayor) Sam Singh, and Ingham County Clerk Barb Byrum. According to the fundraiser invitation, Host Committee membership required a $250 donation, suggesting that Triplett may have already successfully raised over $20,000 for his Council re-election campaign.
