Alon Tal, Ben Gurion University
MSU’s Visiting Serling Israeli Scholar, Professor Alon Tal is a leading environmentalist and the author of From Ruin to Restoration, Israel’s Environmental History. Dr. Tal has received degrees in political science and economics from the University of North Carolina, a degree in law from Hebrew University in Jerusalem, and his Masters and Doctoral degrees from the Harvard School of Public Health in Environmental Health Policy. In 1996, Dr. Tal founded the Arava Institute for Environmental Studies, a graduate studies center in which students join environmentalists from around the world in an advanced interdisciplinary research program. He served as chairman of the committee for sustainable development and is still a member of the international board of the Jewish National Fund (KKL). After a recent sabbatical at Stanford where he completed a new book on Israel’s forests, Dr. Tal has returned to the JNF international board where he chairs the land development committee that oversees forestry.
