With temperatures set to remain bitterly cold for one more day, extraordinary measures are being extended in East Lansing.

East Lansing Public Schools and Michigan State University will again hold no classes today, Thursday, January 31. The City’s offices and 54B District Court are also closed again today.
The City continues to provide emergency services and what the City views as core services from the Department of Public Works.
While Hannah Community Center will remain closed, the East Lansing Public Library, at 950 Abbot Road, will be open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. “as a warming center for community members in need of a short-term place to warm up and charge devices.”
Immediate warming is available 24-hours-a-day at the East Lansing Police Department, at 409 Park Lane (at the back of City Hall). ELPD is providing free transportation to long-term and overnight shelters.
CATA is also providing free transportation to shelters. Area warming shelters are listed here.
Trash and recycling pickup is happening this week, but a day later than normal on every route. Wednesday’s pick-ups will be on Thursday, Thursday’s on Friday, and Friday’s on Saturday.
East Lansing’s strict sidewalk clearance ordinance is temporarily suspended. It is set to take effect again on Friday at 8 p.m. ELPD Deputy Chief Steve Gonzalez tells ELi that that's when tickets may start being issued, "if the violation meets the elements of the ordinance."
Emergency services are reminding people that frostbite and hypothermia can occur very quickly in temperatures with winds like the ones we are currently experiencing. Dial 911 promptly in the event of an emergency.
