As predicted by ELi’s astronomy beat reporter, Aron Sousa, a lunar eclipse thrilled the City of East Lansing early Wednesday morning. A hardy group of a couple dozen celestial enthusiasts braved the pre-dawn chill to share the experience from atop the Shaw Lane parking ramp, behind the MSU planetarium.
Two MSU Freshmen--Peter Simala, a Packaging major from Maryland and Alex Price, a Supply Chain Management major from Plymouth, Michigan--were among those viewing the moon (or lack thereof) through various telescopes. Alex’s interest in the event stems from an astronomy class he is taking. Lansing resident Cindy Mielock took some photos thr one of MSU’s 4.5 inch reflecting telescopes, set up by planetarium employee John French. Other attendees included members of the Capital Area Astronomy Club. Planetarium director Shannon Schmoll, meanwhile, was interviewed by a chilled but enthusiastic television news crew.

Among the subjects discussed by the attendees was the upcoming solar eclipse. As you should expect, complete coverage and accurate predictions of the exact time and date will be provided by East Lansing Info. Planetarium employees expect to have a viewing party, either on the parking ramp or in front of the planetarium.
