Many East Lansing residents reacted negatively to Presidential candidate Donald Trump’s recent appeal to forbid the entrance of Muslims into the country. This reaction led to the creation of The Rally for Peace which was organized by members of the Greater Lansing Network Against War and Injustice (GLNAWI) and others in the community.

One of the community members who has taken a stand is Donna Rich Kaplowitz, an assistant professor at the Residential College in the Arts and Humanities at Michigan State University.

“I was moved to take action,” she stated, “after I heard from a colleague who told me that since the November Paris attack his high school daughter, a classmate of my children, has been harassed by other drivers every time she drives on the streets of our city. She wears a hijab.”

Kaplowitz, whose relatives faced a closed door policy when trying to escape from Nazi Europe and ultimately perished in Nazi concentration camps, refuses to stand idly by as “a new generation of people seeking asylum from a tyrannical system” face similar rejection.

The master minds behind this rally are hoping that others will join them and share their commitment to welcoming Muslim refugees and ending the Islamophobia found in East Lansing. “This issue impacts all of us.” Kaplowitz remarked.

The Rally for Peace will be at 4:45 pm on Tuesday, December 15th at the corner of Abbot and Grand River Ave. The organizers encourage residents to bring a sign and spread the word.
