RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS: ELHS Students Raise $2750 for Breast Cancer Awareness

This past Wednesday, October 22, East Lansing senior women from the class of ‘15 took on the junior women from the class of ’16 in a friendly game of Powder Puff Football. The two classes spent the past three weeks in preparation for this one night event in order to raise money for breast cancer awareness. Through the dedication of everyone involved in the process, East Lansing High School raised a total of $2,750 which will be donated to a local fundraiser, “It’s a Breast Thing.”

After a special thanks to the East Lansing High School football program for allowing the game to take place on the main football field, the game began at 7 o’clock sharp, under the lights. The seniors from the class of ’15 came out with a fiery start, having won the coin toss and starting on offense. Within the first few minutes of the game, the seniors had their first touchdown made by Maggie Cleary, the seniors’ quarterback. However, when the seniors went for a one-point conversion, they were stopped by the juniors’ defensive line.

As the game continued, the juniors found their chance for a touchdown. With only a few minutes left in the first half, junior quarterback Sydney Winchell handed the ball off to her team’s wide receiver, Aubrey Hogan, who ran the ball into the end zone. The juniors proceeded to attempt a two-point conversion, but missed their shot when tackled by the senior defense. At the end of the first half, the game was tied at 6-6.

Following a half-time show conducted by the senior male cheerleaders, both the senior women and junior women took the field, with the juniors in possession of the ball. It was the seniors who pulled through first with a touchdown made by Claire Fossum. Their one-point conversion was good, made by Shannon Johnston-Roper. With a little over three minutes remaining in the game, the juniors did not lose hope. On a second run made by Aubrey Hogan, the juniors’ second touchdown was scored. With a score now of 13-12, the seniors up by one point, the junior women decided to go for a two-point conversion to potentially win the game. Called on a false start, the junior women lost their chance at a win with only a few seconds remaining on the clock.

At the end of the game, it was the senior women who pulled off their one-point win over the junior women with a final score of 13-12. East Lansing High School thanks every single person involved in their first annual Powder Puff game for their hard work and support which made the event as successful as it was. As a school, East Lansing High School is proud to present the $2,750 which was raised for “It’s a Breast Thing,” and would like to congratulate all of the players or their participation. As a player from the junior women class of ’16, I also personally congratulate every player from both the class of ’15 and the class of ’16 on a job well done. As players, we are all so thankful to take place in the first annual Powder Puff game at East Lansing High, and we are hoping there are many more in the years to come.
