Recycle! East Lansing Set for Saturday, June 3

Spring is here, and you have the opportunity to rid your home of unwanted clutter that can be recycled or reused. For over twenty years, the City of East Lansing has organized an event to facilitate cleaning up the community. This year, rain or shine, Recycle! East Lansing will be held on Saturday, June 3, 2017, from 8 am to 3 pm, at the Abbott Center, 1400-1500 Abbot Road. East Lansing residents must bring proof of residency to participate.

There is also curbside collection for seniors and community members with disabilities. Call East Lansing Prime Time Seniors’ Program at 517-337-1113 by Wednesday, May 31, to schedule a collection.

Acceptable items for the event include small appliances, clothing, shoes, books, pillows and blankets, scrap metal and wood, bikes, medication, electronics (there may be a $20 fee), and more. Check the web site information at www.cityofeastlansing.com/RecycleEL for specifics.

BWL residential electric customers will receive a $25 rebate for a working room air conditioner or dehumidifier.

Recycle! East Lansing is manned by volunteers. You can work alongside your neighbors and visit with people you know that protect our environment by disposing of things safely. Volunteers will receive a t-shirt, food and beverages. Organizer, Cathy DeShambo, Environmental Services Administrator for The City of East Lansing, says that she enjoys seeing the people of the community coming together for the public good and a chance to visit with those dropping things off.

"Not only does this event allow the City to divert 30-50 tons of waste from the landfill-which is fantastic,” says DeShambo, “it is an opportunity for community members to come together to volunteer, participate, enjoy the day and feel good about our community's long standing efforts to reuse and recycle."
