Road Work on Saginaw to Continue Through October

Reconstruction of a stretch of Saginaw Street in East Lansing will continue through October, according to Mayor Pro Tem Erik Altmann. The project just started and, Altmann says, “caught people by surprise,” including him.

Altmann provided information about the project at the Council of Neighborhood Presidents meeting yesterday evening, where he was joined by Mayor Mark Meadows. Meadows remarked that parts of the roadway have been “like a washboard.” He told those at the meeting that the plan is for it to be “complete, smooth, and way better by October.”

The reconstruction will include 2.18 miles of road from Coolidge Road to Hagadorn Road. The road is owned by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), which is paying for and overseeing the construction. Meadows said he was glad to see East Lansing “getting our share of highway money [from the State of Michigan] at this point.”

According to a press release from the City, the project includes “resurfacing, joint repairs, ADA [Americans with Disabilities Act] upgrades to sidewalks, curb and gutter work, drainage structure adjustments and pavement markings.”

“MDOT has stated that at least one lane of traffic will remain open in each direction throughout the duration of the project,” according to the City’s press release – meaning that drivers can expect significant back-ups at times.
