Warming Centers Opening in Response to Frigid Temps

East Lansing is facing its coldest temperatures in years, with the wind-chill expected to reach as low as -35 degrees Fahrenheit this week, and the coldest times forecasted to be Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

According to a press release from the City of East Lansing, a warming center is being opened at the Hannah Community Center (ELHCC), at 819 Abbot Road, during normal hours (6 a.m. to 10 p.m.).

The plan earlier was to also offer the East Lansing Public Library, but that location has now closed due to the snow emergency. Residents are encouraged to call Hannah before heading over to make sure it is still open. Dial 517-333-2580 ext. 0.

The East Lansing Police Department (ELPD) is preparing “to transport individuals to overnight shelters as needed" according to a City press release.

City officials will be watching the weather closely in case coordination with the American Red Cross becomes necessary due prolonged cold temperatures.

The City is stressing that the public limit their time outside and not park on the street, if possible, to allow for plowing.

The public should only use heating devices that are meant for indoor use. Improper use of heating devices can result in fires and carbon monoxide poisoning. (Area hardware stores and drug stores generally carry carbon monoxide detectors, which are recommended, along with smoke detectors, for all living quarters. Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless gas sometimes given off when furnaces malfunction.)

East Lansing Public Schools (ELPS) are closed today due to the weather. And, if cold temperatures continue, the schools may be closed several more days into the week. ELi reported last week that ELPS generally will close if temperatures or wind-chills reach -20 Fahrenheit or below.

East Lansing’s 54B District Court is also closed today because of the weather. Veterans’ Court and all other court proceedings will be rescheduled.
