Senior Pets for Senior People offers affection and attention for all

Linda Saloff is 69 years old and for every single one of those years, she has been afraid of cats. Not allergic, not ambivalent, but fearful. Until today.

Two vacant former apartment buildings just north of Peoples Church are being stripped of asbestos and will be coming down soon. The brick structures at 341-345 Evergreen Avenue, known as the “Evergreen Arms” and situated near Valley Court Park, are being cleared of asbestos in advance of demolition of the buildings. This was confirmed for ELi this morning by East Lansing’s Director of Planning, Tim Dempsey.

Foods for Living Offers a rainbow after Friday's Storm

When last week’s storm hit East Lansing, Foods for Living grocery store lost power for more than 30 hours. But what they found in their time of darkness was a sense of community.

At 10 a.m. on Saturday July 9, Foods for Living put a post on their Facebook page asking for people or organizations who need food to come and get their dairy and deli foods before they spoiled. The post was shared more than 168 times. By 2:20 p.m. they had updated the post to say that all the food had been given away.

With electrical provider BWL and East Lansing resident Richard Crittenden still unable to agree on the right way to trim a mature silver maple in Crittenden’s yard, Ingham County Judge Clinton Canady will soon be going out to look at the tree himself.

This week’s meeting of East Lansing’s City Council was a summer classic: short in length, with a driving rain pounding on the roof, and with the minimum number of Councilmembers needed for a quorum in attendance (three). Mayor Mark Meadows and Councilmember Susan Woods are away on vacation, so Mayor Pro Tem Ruth Beier led the meeting. She stumbled a bit with the procedures for voting on items, but was provided friendly help by Councilmembers Shanna Draheim and Erik Altmann.

East Lansing’s Department of Public Works will continue for at least another week to pick-up trees and tree limbs downed by Friday’s storm according to City Manager George Lahanas. Speaking at City Council’s meeting last night, Lahanas praised City employees and residents for coming together to deal with the aftermath of the storm. He asked residents to continue to get downed vegetation to the curb.
