Judge Clears Way for New Owners of Blighted Properties

Ingham County Judge Joyce Draganchuk ruled today against a request for legal delays by the corporation known as City Center Two Project LLC in regard to a group of major blighted properties downtown, essentially clearing the way for new owners to take over without major legal encumbrances. This means the new owners could potentially move to demolish the old buildings and seek approval for redevelopment of the blighted area.

In a pair of unanimous votes, this week East Lansing’s City Council put through a group of zoning changes that appear designed to encourage more housing for non-students in high-density areas of the City and to discourage housing of large number of students in single dwelling units.

Two Deaths in One Month Rocks ELHS, Community

Two East Lansing High School students have died in the space of a month. Both were young women: freshman Sydney E. Zaban on January 13 and Olivia Amy Nokken on February 2.

ELHS Principal Coby Fletcher contacted ELHS parents following both deaths; both letters state that a student died, express condolences and indicate that ELHS staff is prepared to provide support to students.

Lead Persists at Glencairn School Despite Fix

East Lansing Public Schools (ELPS) Superintendent Robyne Thompson notified parents yesterday that in spite of replacement of plumbing suspected of leaching lead at Glencairn Elementary School, water coming to one sink is still testing positive for high levels of lead.

City Attorney May Change as Position Opens Up

Without discussion, last night East Lansing’s City Council passed a resolution authorizing City Manager George Lahanas to put out a call for proposals for a new City Attorney. This follows the City maintaining no-bid contracts for counsel with the East Lansing-based McGinty firm since the 1960s. Tom Yeadon of the McGinty firm has acted as our City’s chief counsel since 2012.

ELPS Board Considers an End to K-5 Programming at Glencairn Elementary School

East Lansing’s Board of Education may be considering moving the entire Glencairn Elementary School – students and staff – into the Red Cedar Elementary School building.

Glencairn could conceivably become a preschool and Headstart school for the ELPS District.

Board President Nell Kuhnmuench called the sudden change in direction “an exciting recommendation and a very, very positive compromise.”

Volunteers Needed for EL Public Skating Rink

The City of East Lansing is seeking volunteers to help with the pop up skating rink to be installed this February in Valley Court Park. The rink is expected to be open for two weeks, from February 11 through February 25, and will be free and open to the public between the hours of 3-9pm as long as the weather allows. Board moves forward with budget for Red Cedar reopening this fall

The East Lansing School Board heard hours of testimony from parents, teachers and community members Monday night before approving a $564,000 budget allocation to begin the process of reopening Red Cedar Elementary school as a pre-kindergarten through fifth grade STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) school this fall. The Board also passed an amendment stating that any expenditures for Red Cedar would have to be approved by the BOE before that money is actually spent.

They have generally been less vocal than opponents at recent East Lansing School Board meetings and heated social media discussions, but there are numerous supporters of the movement to reopen Red Cedar Elementary as a pre-K-5 school this coming fall. ELi asked local leaders among them to share their reasoning. We relay here the comments of four East Lansing Public Schools (ELPS) Board members, East Lansing’s Mayor Pro Tem, and a former member of City Council who is a member of the Red Cedar neighborhood.
