Sex Ed Advisory Board Meets Tonight

Tonight is the first meeting of the Sex Education Advisory Board for the East Lansing School District.

The board will discuss the school’s sex ed curriculum at 7 p.m. in the board room of the lower level of the East Lansing High School, 509 Burcham Drive.

In its July meeting, the East Lansing Board of Education approved the creation of the advisory board to include 16 members, two of whom are pupils in the school district. It was not clear this morning the identities of the members.

Other meetings of the board will take place Oct. 14, Nov. 11 and Dec. 9. 

Home Invasion Attempted This Morning in Oakwood Neighborhood

The East Lansing Police Department is currently looking for a suspect involved in an attempted home invasion that occurred at approximately 6:45 a.m. today at a home near the intersection of Fern Street and Sunset Lane in East Lansing’s Oakwood neighborhood. According to an ELPD officer, a dog at the house confronted the individual, who seemed to be “unphased.”

Richardson's work converting his own home into a more energy efficient model gained him recognition in the category of Best Residential Project. According to a press release from ELPD “Last week, after the MSU football win against Oregon, there were seven fires set in the City of East Lansing, primarily in student areas. These fires are extremely dangerous to bystanders in the area, but also to first responders that are called to extinguish them. Responding to these fires multiple times in a single night can also affect the response time to those in the community in need of medical attention.”

There is a new park in the Glencairn neighborhood, behind Hannah Community Center. Well, okay, the green space at the intersection of Sunset Lane and Southlawn Avenue has always been there, and some people even knew it was a city park. But now the City of East Lansing has named it the Corey Cafagna Park. The park will soon have what people expect in a neighborhood park---benches, a flower planter, and an "official" name sign.

Students are feeling a little squeezed in some of the classrooms in East Lansing Elementary schools and the administration may be forced to move some students to ease the pressure.

Dr. Robyne Thompson, Superintendent, told the East Lansing Board of Education Monday night that second grade classroom levels have “exploded” this year, especially at Pinecrest and Marble schools.

Originally the event was to be held at ELPL. However protesters have heard about the event and have been harassing the library, threatening to protest.
