The question this week: Who funded Kathy Boyle’s campaign?
Some background: Three weeks ago, we answered a reader’s inquiry about who funded Susan Woods’ campaign for Council. In response, readers asked us to also examine and report who funded the other current Councilmembers’ campaigns. I asked our Managing Editor Ann Nichols to roll a die to determine which campaign I’d review next. So far, we have also reviewed Ruth Beier’s campaign finances and Nathan Triplett’s campaign finances. This week we look at Kathy Boyle’s.
Kathleen (Kathy) Boyle was appointed to Council in September, 2012, to fill the seat vacated when Don Power resigned. She was then elected to City Council in the November 2013 election.
How I investigated the answer: I went to the Ingham County Clerk elections website and clicked on “campaign finance report search” and then searched under Boyle’s name. Doing so gave me all the correspondence about her campaign. (You can do this with any candidate.) I focused mainly on the campaign reports marked “received” October 25, 2013, and December 5, 2013, because those are the ones that listed her donors.
What the campaign finance reports show: Boyle raised $4,385 for her 2013 campaign, not counting $1452 that she herself lent her campaign. (She later partially repaid herself from the campaign.) I find no donations after the election. The donations are shown below in table form. Here is what they show:
About 27% of Boyle’s campaign donations, for a total of $1200, came from PACs (Political Action Committees). This includes $50 from an LGBT Rights PAC, $650 from two union-related PACs, and $500 from the PAC of the law firm that employs Boyle. (Boyle is an attorney and according to Boyle’s professional webpage, her legal practice “includes labor law and campaign finance issues. She also serves as a facilitative mediator for several Circuit Courts throughout the state, including Ingham County.”)
The remaining donations to Boyle’s campaign all came from people in East Lansing, including two Council members; Nathan Triplett and Diane Goddeeris each gave her $100. This means that about 73% of Boyle’s campaign donations came from individuals in East Lansing, by far the highest of any of the campaigns examined.
Only one individual among those donors has obvious professional business dealings with Council, namely attorney George Brookover, who donated $100 and who represents clients who may have business before Council. Brookover used his law firm’s business address as his donation address.
Donor information : The campaign reports marked “received” October 25, 2013, and December 5, 2013, show the following:

Note: Boyle’s campaign statements include handwritten entries that are sometimes difficult to read. I have transcribed these as best I can and apologize for any spelling errors.
