UPDATE, Monday, July 27, 10 am: According to Lieutenant Steve Gonzalez of the East Lansing Police Department, "Due to the fact that a fatality occurred it's considered an open criminal investigation and will be sent to the Ingham County Prosecutor's Office to review whether or not the driver is criminally culpable for the death. Due to these circumstances we can't release any further details on the incident until the prosecutor completes their review."

[Original story follows, from Friday, July 24, 2015:]

There was a fatal accident this evening in the parking lot of St. Thomas Aquinas Church on Alton Road in East Lansing. According to the East Lansing Police Department (ELPD), emergency services were called at 6:17 pm.

The ELPD reports that, “Upon arrival at the scene, it was discovered that a van had struck a tree in the parking lot. There were four occupants in the vehicle who sustained injuries and one of the occupants has died from her injuries. The deceased victim is Marjorie Marie Stine, a 69 year old female from Lansing. Next of kin has been notified. The other occupants of the vehicle were transported to Sparrow Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.”

ELPD says that, “This accident remains under investigation by ELPD and the Ingham Regional Crash Investigation Team.”
