Winter weather is bound to return to mid-Michigan, and when it does you can test out your balance and stamina with cross country skiing.
Cross country skiing requires skiers to glide themselves across snowy trails, relying almost entirely on their own personal strength and stride rather than the gravity used in downhill skiing. For this reason (and many more) it is considered one of the healthiest winter sports. Not only is it a full body workout, but it is also more accessible in mid-Michigan than downhill skiing, and can fit into almost any budget.
There are many parks in the region that are open to cross country skiing when weather permits. Some parks have groomed trails, where the snow has been packed down specifically for skiers. Any type of ski can be utilized on a groomed trail, and in general they are the easiest trails for beginners to use.
Ungroomed trails occur when skiers break in a track by skiing over pristine untouched snow. It can be harder to ski through deep snow without proper gear, but it allows skiers to get off the beaten path and experience a winter wonderland away from crowds.
If you’ve never tried cross country skiing or do not own equipment, have no fear! There are many parks in the area that offer equipment, lessons, and groomed trails.
