Elizabeth Beckett
Class of 2014
What is your occupation?
I recently graduated from Michigan State University.
Why did you make East Lansing home?
I chose to come to MSU and to stay in East Lansing because of the programs offered at MSU and through my college degree program, the Residential College in the Arts and Humanities (RCAH). RCAH is an interdisciplinary arts and humanities degree with an emphasis on social justice, writing and community engagement.
Where did you grow up in East Lansing?
Pinecrest Neighborhood
Where do you live now?
Off-campus housing behind the Hannah Community Center (part of the Glencairn neighborhood I think?).
What are some funny or fond memories you have about high school?
Some of my fondest memories of high school were of participating in the theater department productions. I was in seven shows throughout my career. I loved the process of creating a show with my peers and then the joy of performing for the community.
What was your favorite place in East Lansing when you attended high school? Why? When I was in high school, I really enjoyed going on bike rides when the weather was nice, especially on the trails that go through the city and through MSU's campus and gardens. I loved these spaces because it allowed me to unwind from my heavy workload from school, reflect on things happening in my life, and also enjoy fun activities and adventures with my friends.

What path did you initially take when you graduated?
I went right to college at MSU the fall following my graduation from high school.
What do you think is different about high school today?
Technology use is something that I have noticed that has changed significantly. When I was in high school, my friends and I didn't have smartphones and I never had my phone out in class. However, when I have taught at ELHS, student use of technology during class is very noticeable; this can also be seen due to the fact that the school has blocked certain social media apps from being used on the school WiFi.
What do you think is the same?
I think there is still a lot of pressure in high school, especially in the later years, with decisions about the future, high-stakes tests and facing independence.
What advice do you have for graduating seniors?
Find your voice and stay true to it. I know it is cheesy, but it's one of the most important lessons I have learned and the most significant way I have grown in my time in college. Take chances, explore new things, and find your passions.
