If you’ve been reading articles on East Lansing Info.org (Eli), you have probably started to see how Eli fits into the life of our community. For people who like to be informed, Eli provides a piece that’s been missing – there’s The State Journal for comprehensive state and local coverage, City Pulse for Lansing-based coverage, and maybe The New York Times or The Washington Post for in-depth national and international news and features. Eli brings you hyper-local East Lansing coverage, as well as an opportunity to participate in deciding what the news is, by asking questions, by writing in with suggestions and by writing for us.
The uniquely “by-the-people” nature of Eli doesn’t make it “better” than other local or national news sources; it simply provides a unique opportunity to jump in and spread the word about your passions, your concerns…what you see in this community that you’d like everyone to see. If you can do that fairly and without bias, you’re the writer we’re looking for. (Plus, we’ll pay you. Not a lot, because we’re a fledgling non-profit, but more writers and more perspectives means more reader and supporters, which means more money for writers).
Specifically, we’re looking for writers (and in one case an editor) to cover and manage several topics:
Sports Reporter – this job would involve covering local sports other than MSU athletics, everything from Rec League teams to ELHS sports and adult soccer, softball and hockey teams. You can profile a player, profile a team, cover a tournament, pitch us anything and everything that you think would engage our readers and bring in new ones.
Senior Life Reporters (2) – senior citizens in East Lansing are leading among the most interesting, busy and article-worthy lives of anyone we know. They are volunteering at hospitals and schools, traveling with the MSU football team, running food pantries, raising grandchildren and lecturing on topics from interior design to Tudor England. Seniors are often the people who know the most about East Lansing history, and who have the most seasoned perspective on local politics. Are you a senior who would like to cover this essential part of our community? Do you know one? We’d really love to have two.
Government Reporters - want to be on the cutting edge of development, policy and political process in East Lansing? We need citizen reporters to write useful, unbiased articles about everything from City Council meetings to finance and ethics issues. The more voices we have, the broader our perspective and our ability to shine light on the most complicated and confusing issues facing East Lansing citizens.
Business Section Editor – we need someone not only to write, but to find and work with other writers to cover the East Lansing business scene – what’s coming, what’s leaving, what’s happening with startups and inventors, what’s thriving and what’s not, economic realities and expert predictions. You’d need to commit to this position long-term, and attend editorial meetings but you’d also be compensated on the editorial scale.
If you see a job here that speaks to you, even if you’d just like to dip a toe in and find out if you like it, please contact Managing Editor Ann Nichols at editor@eastlansinginfo.org. Also, please share this with anyone who might be interested in writing for us in any of the above capacities, or about something completely different. We’re all yours.
ELi brings you what no one else does: non-commercial, factual, citizen-reporting of what's happening in East Lansing. If you want us to keep bringing you this high-quality service, you need to contribute to make it happen! Donate easily on line or donate by check. Because ELi is a recognized 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, serving the people of East Lansing, your donations are tax deductible.
