Mixed Response to Improvements in Chesterfield Hills

Wednesday, September 2, 2015

Walk through the Chesterfield Hills neighborhood and you will notice some changes underfoot. These include new curbs and ramps, newly paved streets, and sidewalks added to traffic circles and triangles.

Between the new curbs and ramps, though, many sidewalks remain in a state of disrepair.

ASK ELi: Streetlights Out?

Friday, August 28, 2015

A reader asked us to find out: “What is the appropriate way to report street lights that are not working in East Lansing? On Spartan, between Albert and Synder there are 3-4 lights (all along the two block section) that are not working. What is the city doing about keeping streetlights working? How do street lights play into city's effort to keep residents safe in light of the recent break-ins?”

BWL to Introduce New Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) This Fall

Tuesday, August 25, 2015

I recently met with Bob Nelson to discuss what he sees as important issues coming up at BWL that will be of particular concern to East Lansing customers. Nelson, who lives in East Lansing, is a member of the BWL Governance Board.

He talked to me about a new program being introduced this fall called the Integrated Resource Plan (IRP). This plan will "determine where the Board of Water and Light gets its energy resources from for the next 20 years. Among the potential sources are solar, wind, other sustainable sources, and energy conservation."

Note: This article was updated on August 19th, 2015 to indicate that the location of proposed condo development near Chandler and State Roads is Falcon Pointe, not Hawk's Nest as we originally reported.

The August 18 meeting of City Council was a “work session,” which means it was not videotaped or broadcast. You can listen to an audio recording by clicking here.

ASK ELi: Sewer Back-Ups in EL Homes

Friday, August 14, 2015

Image: East Lansing work crew dealing with a sewer

After Monday’s very heavy rain, a reader wrote to ask: “We have had this [a sewer back-up in the drain] happen in our home for three years in a row now, and East Lansing govt. says it is a freak ‘act of nature’ that they can't control. Do you know if there are any organizations discussing putting some pressure on City to deal with combined storm/sanitary sewer problems? I would like to be part of a group making this effort.”

ASK ELi: Must the Sweepers Wake Us Up?

Wednesday, August 12, 2015

An ELi reader asked, via Twitter: “It’s six in the morning. Is the street sweeper really necessary right now?”

The answer we have for you comes from Ron Lacasse, Infrastructure Administrator for the City of East Lansing, who explains, “Our sweeper comes in at 5:30 in the morning for two reasons.”

MSU Student Hopes to Broaden Recycling Services

Monday, July 27, 2015

You might have received a visit from Nathan Capper to your own home, or perhaps noticed him walking around town with a petition pressed under his arm. The MSU student is organizing efforts to make recycling services easily available to all apartment residents in East Lansing, and hopes to raise your awareness and gain your support.

Folklorist Doggedly Researches Developers

Thursday, July 16, 2015

When one thinks about influential people in city governmental affairs, one might picture local elected officials, high-ranking city staff, or maybe wealthy business owners. What one probably wouldn’t picture is someone like Eliot Singer: a bespectacled, white-bearded folklorist, often spotted crossing campus and town with the aid of his walking sticks.

BWL Sues EL Homeowner Behind Tree-Defense Yard Sign Campaign

Tuesday, July 14, 2015

Image: Richard Crittenden outside his home with one of the yard signs he had produced

The Lansing Board of Water and Light (BWL) has filed a lawsuit against the East Lansing homeowner who initiated a yard sign campaign to push back against what that homeowner called an overly aggressive “vegetation management” campaign by the electric utility.

ELi ON EARTH: More Efficient Recycling Coming

Monday, July 13, 2015

Image: The new recycling bins coming soon to East Lansing neighborhoods

Recycling in East Lansing is getting re-cycled! There has been a buzz in East Lansing about bigger bins, an expanded list of recyclables, changing collection schedules, and more. I reached out to Cathy DeShambo, Environmental Services Administrator for the City of East Lansing, for her insights into the changes residents can expect, and this is what she had to say:

How will the recycling program be changing?
