Valley Court Farmers' Market Abundant with Local Fare

Sunday, June 14, 2015

Having just been there, I can report that the East Lansing Farmers’ Market, which is open until 2 pm today, has an abundance of local fare to offer today.

Strawberries and rhubarb can be had, and if you’re too busy or lazy to make your own pie, there is also a pie vendor selling a wide assortment of favorites. You can get locally-farmed maple syrup to put with those strawberries on some French toast tomorrow morning. And the bourbon-flavored syrup tastes like it would be terrific on grilled pork. (See below on meats.)

DIGGING IN: Purslane—to Harvest or to Weed?

Thursday, June 11, 2015

Several years ago, I returned to East Lansing in mid-July from a week-long vacation and found innumerable purslane plants that had grown considerably among our staked tomato plants. I recognized the plant from the edges of sidewalks in town and paths on the MSU campus but had not paid much attention to it.

MARKET MONITOR: Spoonful of Granola

Tuesday, June 2, 2015

Editor's Note: This article originally appeared on ELi in September of 2014. Our readership was smaller then and you may have missed it, so we decided to revisit it as the inaugural story in our new "Market Monitor" series.

Sara Beer doesn’t just show up at the East Lansing Farmers’ Market on Sunday mornings with homemade granola and a great smile. A tremendous amount of work goes into every week of selling Spoonful of Granola at the Market, and for Beer, that work is a labor of love.

DIGGING IN: Cooking with Dandelions

Thursday, May 7, 2015

As a lover of vegetable gardening, I look forward each spring to the first “meals from the garden.” Even with our jerry-rigged greenhouse of three old storm windows laid across a repurposed sandbox, the lettuces, spinach, and arugula planted a month ago aren’t yet anywhere near ready to pick this early in the spring.

Eli Asks: East Lansing Restaurants

Friday, May 1, 2015

“Ask Eli” is usually a response to reader questions. This week, we decided to turn the tables and ask the questions instead of answering them.

We asked random people on Grand River Avenue these three questions:

  1. Where do you like to eat in East Lansing?
  2. What do you think about the EL restaurant scene? Anything you’d change?

Megan and Danielle.

You can do all of those things (and lots more) at The Lansing Home & Garden Show, which opened yesterday and runs through Sunday at MSU’s Pavilion.

ANN ABOUT TOWN: Tannin

Tuesday, March 17, 2015

"It’s the kind of place where a person, a couple or a family could eat fairly often without running out of menu, and where it would never be necessary to dress up (although it might be fun if you did)."
