Members of the East Lansing Schools Board of Trustees unanimously approved a resolution opposing all guns in all schools “other than those carried by trained law enforcement.” Karessa Wheeler has the story.

A local nonprofit will host an educational panel and discussion for parents, guardians and staff of the East Lansing School District on how to prevent, identify and support children and families who have experienced sexual abuse and trauma. Ann Kammerer reports.

It was a full house in the Glencairn Elementary library yesterday as the plans were revealed for upcoming changes to the building and site. Karessa Wheeler has the scoop on the proposed changes and next steps.

A forum today from 6-7:30 at Glencairn Elementary will include a first look at building and site plans and a chance for community input. A similar forum will take place at Donley Elementary next week.

There was mixed reaction to an announcement that the East Lansing Public Schools will be adopting a new science curriculum, and changing the current class offerings to eliminate several pre-AP classes.

“We researched both sides and more sleep causes students to be more alert, get better grades and have less accidents,” a member of the MacDonald Middle School Debate Club told the School Board at last night's meeting. “Students’ voices should be heard because this affects them.”

“At the high school level, we see a need for comprehensive, systematic, integrated, accessible approach to student services,” Novello said. “We are wondering about that gap. We want it to be something that is really understood. We know there are services, but there is a gap in the students feeling their needs are being met.”

The results of recent polling by the East Lansing School District show a marked preference for a later high school start time, but it's a long road from gathering that data to making a change. Karessa Wheeler explains.

East Lansing's City Council met for four hours Sunday morning to start setting strategic prioirites and to work on budget cuts. About twenty citizens attended. ELi's Chris Root reports.
