ELi on EARTH: Sweet Harvest

The sugar beet harvest has arrived in Michigan just to the north and east of East Lansing. Driving by the areas where the beets are farmed, you can see huge piles of the beets piled in trucks and on staging pads across the region. The beets look like big, cream-colored turnips. One pile I drove by in Sebewaing two weeks ago was about 15-feet high, two lanes wide, and as long as a football field. (See below.)

Developer Removing Trees along Northern Tier Trail Without Permission

As we reported in this week’s Council Capsule, last night East Lansing’s City Council discussed allowing a developer to create a paved spur attaching the Northern Tier Trail to Chandler Road. City Council is due to vote on the issue next Tuesday.

City Changing Ordinance to Support Deer Hunt

With plans in place to start killing deer in East Lansing starting late next month, City Council will be voting in November to change an ordinance to support the plan. Such a legal change may not really be necessary according to City Attorney Tom Yeadon. But Yeadon told City Council on Tuesday night that prudence suggests an amendment to the current ordinance involving restriction of firearms so that it will be straightforward in the future for the City or State to cull deer as necessary in the City of East Lansing.

East Lansing Residents Receive New Recycling Carts

During the past week, you may have noticed the large green rolling recycling bins appearing at houses and apartment complexes across East Lansing. These 96-gallon carts, funded by a grant from The Recycling Partnership, aim to expand the list of possible recyclables the city accepts. The list of new recyclables is available here.

East Lansing Man Nominated for Governor's Energy Efficiency Award

Richardson's East Lansing home

East Lansing resident Charlie Richardson has been honored with a nomination for the First Annual Governor's Energy Excellence Award. Richardson's work converting his own home into a more energy efficient model gained him recognition in the category of Best Residential Project. I spoke with him to learn more about his own work and gain insight into his suggestions for all homeowners.
