With a new report confirming that East Lansing is facing a very large retiree-related debt, the Financial Health Team is suggesting the City consider new tax levies on people who live and work in East Lansing. These may include an income tax as well as special property taxes levied for emergency services.

City of East Lansing urges residents to stay safe during heat wave

With temperatures expected to exceed 90 degrees over the course of several days this week, the City of East Lansing has asked us to remind residents to keep the following safety tips in mind.

These tips were adapted from the American Red Cross, and provided to us by the City:

1. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids.

2. Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, light-colored clothing.

3. Slow down, stay indoors when possible and avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day.

Meridian Board Votes Against CATA’s BRT

The Meridian Township Board has passed a resolution in opposition to CATA’s planned Bus Rapid Transit (BRT). Passed last night, the Board’s resolution has no formal impact on the plan, because the roads involved (Michigan and Grand River Avenues) are owned by the City of Lansing and the State of Michigan. But the move could affect CATA’s chances of obtaining federal funding for the project.

Medical Marijuana, Legalization and Science: A Complicated Issue

Medical marijuana, and clinical medical marijuana have the same legal definition according to the Michigan “Medical Marihuana Act” of 2008. Medical marijuana is any part of the Cannabis sativa plant, or derived compounds from the plant, which have been prescribed by a qualified and registered primary care physician for the purposes of treating a medical condition. The patient must also be registered with and issued an identification card by the Michigan Department of Community Health.
