ELPS Board votes on outside sex ed vendors, Social Media Rules for District Employees

Outside vendors are again allowed to present sex education programs at East Lansing schools. The Board of Education Monday night rescinded their earlier motion banning anyone not employed by the School District from being a part of the sex education classes.

The vote was unanimous and there was no discussion on the issue by the Board.

Facing numerous financial challenges—including the funding of MSU emergency services and substantial employee-related costs—City of East Lansing staffers and City Council members convened Saturday morning for a special budget meeting. The meeting, held at Hannah Community Center, included an overview of the City’s budget, a review of the City’s General Fund five-year forecast and discussion of preliminary budget assumptions for fiscal year 2017.

This Tuesday’s East Lansing City Council meeting began with a special presentation to recognize citizens who had recently completed serving two full terms on a City Board or Commission.

East Lansing’s municipal government encourages the active participation of its citizens through appointments to its 23 boards and commissions. These groups have varying scopes and responsibilities, with some meeting frequently and others annually or only as needed.

East Lansing Interfaith Community Meets to Show Support for Muslim Neighbors

Last Friday, members of the East Lansing Clergy Association, an interfaith organization, met at The Islamic Center of East Lansing to show support for and solidarity with their Muslim neighbors.

The clergy presented a Resolution entitled “A Resolution Affirming the Shared Values and Intentions of the Interfaith Community of East Lansing, MI” to Imam Sohail Chaudhry of the Islamic Center. The Resolution, which was drafted by Reverend Margie Osborn of Eastminister Presbyterian Church, and signed by members of the East Lansing Clergy Association, states the following:

East Lansing School Board Suspends Efforts to Re-Open Red Cedar for 2016

The East Lansing Board of Education voted tonight to rescind its December motion to reopen Red Cedar Elementary School as a pre-K through 5th grade for the fall of 2016.

Instead, they have agreed to create a panel of “teacher leaders” with at least one community member to study the feasibility of putting pre-kindergarten programming at the closed south side school.

New Initiative Lets EL Citizens Dispute Parking Tickets Online

The process of disputing parking tickets has just become a lot easier. East Lansing’s 54B District Court has added an online platform for review of parking tickets.

Historically, an unfair parking ticket was often grudgingly paid due to the unwillingness to withstand what might be a lengthy court process. Paying the fine often seemed worth the price to avoid the hassle. On the flip side, a citizen unwilling to pay for an undeserved parking ticket might have been unable to make it to court and faced increasingly severe penalties as deadlines passed.
