Mark Meadows, Shanna Draheim, and Erik Altmann have won the election for East Lansing City Council. They will join sitting Councilmembers Ruth Beier and Susan Woods on November 17, 2015. (There is no meeting of City Council before then.)

At that meeting, the new members of Council will be sworn in, and the first order of business will be for the five to elect the Mayor and Mayor Pro Tem from among the five.

High School Boys’ Water Polo Team Qualifies for Regionals for the First Time

The combined water polo team of East Lansing and Holt High Schools (HOTEL) has qualified for Michigan Water Polo Association’s Regional tournament for the first time ever. Regionals will be held October 30 and October 31 at Saline High School. HOTEL faces Ann Arbor Pioneer, the number-four ranked team in the state, at 7:45 p.m. on Friday. If HOTEL wins the game on Friday, they will qualify for a spot at the MWPA state tournament for the first time in the co-op’s history.

The Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce has launched an attack ad on City Council candidate Erik Altmann, declaring Altmann “wrong for East Lansing.”

Iorio's Gelato and Caffe to Open in Trowbridge Lofts

On November 9, Iorio’s Gelato and Caffe will be opening up in the Trowbridge Lofts.

According to the owner, Nick Lemmer, his family is from the area and that was one of the reasons that he decided to open his business in East Lansing. Lemmer also said that they have a shop in Ann Arbor and wanted to take the opportunity to expand further, especially because they have been given so much support for their idea.

Polling Locations Change

Voters planning to cast ballots in next Tuesday's City Council race should be aware that some polling locations have recently changed.

Precinct 9 has been voting until now at the Bailey Community Center, but since that building is now closed, for this election Precinct 9 voters will cast ballots at Edgewood United Church, on Hagadorn Road.

Precinct 10 will also be voting at Edgewood United Church, as it normally does. City Clerk Marie Wicks says that there will be signage at Edgewood United to make sure voters know whether to line up for Precinct 9 or Precinct 10 voting.

E Coli Detected in Uncle John's Cider

Uncle John’s Cider Mill is hoping to be back in the apple cider business as early as tomorrow, said company president Mike Beck.

The popular St. Johns orchard and mill has voluntarily ceased selling all cider products following a positive test for the bacteria E.coli in a specific batch produced and sold at the mill.

“We have ceased selling all cider and are awaiting further testing,” Mr. Beck said. “We hope to start again tomorrow morning.”

He advises anyone who has purchased the cider with a use-by date of Oct. 30 to dispose of it.
