EL School Board Moves Forward to Re-Open Red Cedar

The East Lansing School Board took a major step toward reopening the shuttered Red Cedar Elementary School on Monday Night, adopting a resolution to appoint a committee charged with “initiating innovative educational programming in fall 2016 for pre-k through grade 5 at Red Cedar, as mandated by the 2012 resolution, and on or after the Fall of 2016, but no later than the Fall of 2017, at Donley.”

With three East Lansing City Council members’ terms ending next month, only two sitting Councilmembers are certain to remain: Ruth Beier and Susan Woods. Asked by ELi this week who they are endorsing in the City Council race, the two split, with no overlap:

Susan Woods is endorsing Shanna Draheim, Jermaine Ruffin, and Nathan Triplett.

Ruth Beier is endorsing Erik Altmann, Mark Meadows, and Steve Ross.

Split Council Vote on New Downtown Bar

East Lansing’s City Council voted 3-2 yesterday to approve a request for a new bar and restaurant to stay open until 2 a.m. serving alcohol. The establishment, Tin Can, will replace Spencer’s Stateside Deli and Pub, which in turn replaced Melting Moments Ice Cream on Grand River Avenue near Curious Book Shop.

The 3-2 vote divided as we have seen it time and again this year at City Council: Mayor Nathan Triplett, Mayor Pro Tem Diane Goddeeris, and Councilmember Susan Woods voted in favor; Councilmembers Ruth Beier and Kathy Boyle voted against.

Big Library Book Sale October 10-11

The annual book sale sponsored by Friends of the East Lansing Public Library (FOELPL) is a tradition many people don't want to miss. This year, because of major renovation at the library, the event will be held in a new location---Hannah Community Center, 819 Abbot Road in East Lansing. Book sale hours have been expanded, from 9 am to 6 pm on Saturday, October 10, and from 1 to 4 pm on Sunday, October 11.

This weekend, discover artist-eye views of Mother Nature that exist far closer to home than you might imagine.

Artist Lou Heiser will take viewers on a journey through the beautiful landscapes of Michigan with his collection of oil paintings entitled “Vistas of Michigan.” The exhibition will be opening this Sunday, October 4, 2015 from 1 to 4pm at Saper Galleries in downtown East Lansing. It is free and open to the public.

East Lansing Residents Receive New Recycling Carts

During the past week, you may have noticed the large green rolling recycling bins appearing at houses and apartment complexes across East Lansing. These 96-gallon carts, funded by a grant from The Recycling Partnership, aim to expand the list of possible recyclables the city accepts. The list of new recyclables is available here.

It was a full house for last night’s City Council Candidate Forum at the Hannah Community Center. The event was organized by the League of Women Voters (LWV) of the Lansing Area, and moderated by LWV member Camilla Davis, of Dewitt.

Deer culls—government-controlled killing by firearms—will likely begin in East Lansing in late November or early December according to Cathy DeShambo, Environmental Services Administrator for the City of East Lansing. DeShambo revealed this in speaking to the Council of Neighborhood Presidents meeting on Monday, September 27, at the Hannah Community Center.

I bit my lip to hold back tears, I shoved my phone deep into my backpack so I could pretend it wasn’t actually 4:30 a.m., and downed the rest of my Red Bull. I could no longer keep track of whether it was my first or third of the evening, and I was barely able to stay awake long enough to read the messy notes in front of me.

I realized I was staring blankly at the keynote presentation, when I heard my mentor’s exasperated voice, trying to bring my attention back to business.

City Hall and Court to Be Locked Down

East Lansing City staff are recommending to City Council that hundreds of thousands of dollars be spent creating a new security system for our City Hall and court building. Under the proposal, all visitors to City Hall and the court would have to go through a metal detector staffed by an officer, whether visitors are coming to attend public meetings, pay real estate taxes or parking tickets, or serve on a jury.

Red Cedar Elementary May Re-Open

The doors of Red Cedar Elementary School may be reopened under some form of alternative programming, according to a proposal under discussion by the East Lansing Board of Education.

Board member Kath Edsall introduced a proposal to initiate pre-Kindergarten through 5 programming in the closed elementary school. The motion, to be brought back to the board for action Oct. 12, also included some alternative programming at Donley Elementary School.

Sam Maves competes for the ball in East Lansing's  win against Holt High School

On Saturday, while most of East Lansing will be thinking about MSU’s in-state football game against Central Michigan, the East Lansing High School Boys Soccer Team will be focusing on their big match against Detroit Catholic Central. While the game is non-conference, the Trojans are hoping the competition will prepare them for teams they will be facing in the playoffs.
