Murphy to Serve as Interim ELPD Chief

East Lansing Police Department (ELPD) Deputy Chief Jeff Murphy is set to take over as interim ELPD Chief on June 30, when Chief Juli Liebler retires. Murphy was recently named Interim Chief by City Manager George Lahanas whose job it is to choose the interim and permanent chief.

The recent heavy rains are causing a phenomenon infrequently seen on the Red Cedar River—a standing wave outside the MSU Administration Building. Unusually high levels of water combined with the small rapids in that location cause the water to curl back towards upstream.

Valley Court Farmers' Market Abundant with Local Fare

Having just been there, I can report that the East Lansing Farmers’ Market, which is open until 2 pm today, has an abundance of local fare to offer today.

Strawberries and rhubarb can be had, and if you’re too busy or lazy to make your own pie, there is also a pie vendor selling a wide assortment of favorites. You can get locally-farmed maple syrup to put with those strawberries on some French toast tomorrow morning. And the bourbon-flavored syrup tastes like it would be terrific on grilled pork. A Productive Year for East Lansing High School’s Students for Gender Equality

East Lansing High School’s Students for Gender Equality Club was created in May of 2014, when its co-presidents Brianna Wells, Aiden Foster-Fishman, Sarah Hansen, and Sara Faverman, identified what they believed to be clear gender biases within a cyber safety presentation given by the High School. “We then decided to create a club to combat these and bring awareness to the school,” says Co-President Hansen.

Max's Race Returns June 27th

 Max's Race is back this year with the continued purpose of honoring the memory of Maxwell Matthews and helping families with sick children. This year’s Race Day events include an 8:30AM 5K Run/Walk, a 9:30AM Kids' 1 Mile Run and 9:45-10:00AM Kids Fun Runs.

Max, son of Natalie and Jim Matthews, contracted bacterial meningitis in 1998 when he was only 7 months old. He was almost 7 years old when he died in 2005 due to complications from the disease.

Owner Asks for Downtown House to Be De-Landmarked

City Council will tonight review a request from an owner of a downtown house that currently has Landmark Designation to have that designation revoked, and to also remove it from an East Lansing historic district. Objections are being raised by those who say the house is of substantial historical significance to East Lansing.

Pumpstock Festival This Saturday

Tomorrow: The June 6 Pumpstock Music Festival at Bailey Park will offer both local stars and nationally touring artists playing on two stages for continuous music from 2pm to 8pm.

Festival organizer Dudley “Smitty” Smith was involved with Pump House Concerts before the Festival was founded. The idea of these concerts – “an intimate atmosphere and a comfortable and involving listening environment” – blossomed into Pumpstock.

Trowbridge Developer Fixing Fire Suppression Issue

According to an email message yesterday sent from Tim Dempsey, Director of Planning for the City of East Lansing, to City Manager George Lahanas, a recent inspection of the new residential apartment building at Trowbridge Plaza turned up “insufficient fire separation between the commercial and residential spaces (first floor and second floor).”
