Holocaust Survivor to Speak at Shaarey Zedek Synagogue

Eva Mozes Kor

This Tuesday, June 9th, Eva Mozes Kor, Holocaust survivor and author of Surviving the Angel of Death and Echoes from Auschwitz, will be giving a talk at Shaarey Zedek synagogue in East Lansing.

Eva is widely known for her efforts to educate the world about The Holocaust and her advocacy for forgiveness as a healing method. She has been featured in the documentary “Forgiving Dr. Mengele," and in the more recent CNN production “Voices of Auschwitz.”

Trowbridge Development Still Causing Strife at Council

Following a good deal of argument, East Lansing’s City Council voted 4-1 last night to approve River Caddis developer Kevin McGraw’s latest request for Trowbridge Village: this time for 45 additional parking spaces to deal with what McGraw now says is inadequate parking at the nearly-completed development.

The Reproductive Health Advisory Committee (RHAC) of the East Lansing Board of Education will meet tomorrow, Wednesday, June 3, at 7:00PM in the Pinecrest Elementary School Library to discuss District reproductive health curriculum. This meeting is open to the public.

Council to Consider Bailey Community Center Proposal

At its work session last night, East Lansing’s City Council invited the Capital Area Housing Partnership (CAHP) to present its proposal for reuse of the Bailey Community Center building at the June 2 Council meeting, when residents will be able to watch the meeting live on television or streaming on the City’s website. At that meeting, the Council also will discuss how to proceed with the decision-making process about the Center and how to communicate this to the public.

Visitors to this year’s East Lansing Farmers’ Market in Valley Court (opening June 7) will see a new art feature just north of the market. The steps running from Valley Court’s glacial washout plain up to the Oakwood Neighborhood have been painted rainbow colors under a project led by Melissa Sortman and Terry Scharf.

Although last night’s City Council meeting lasted only about an hour, it was permeated with debate about Tax Increment Financing, or TIF. The lively TIF discussion stretched from public comments into councilmember reports into the discussion of the City’s budget and finally into the main reason it had come up: a re-vote on the Gateway Project “Amended Brownfield Plan #4” for the project DTN plans to build at 300 West Grand River Avenue, between Biggby’s and the West Village townhouse condos.

2015 Ride of Silence Honors Byclists

The Ride of Silence is a global event going into its 12th consecutive year, and serves as a memorial for those who have been harmed or killed while riding a bike. The first Ride of Silence took place in Dallas and has stretched to 314 locations across the globe including 21 countries and every continent.

Cyclists legally share the road with motorists, but not all city officials, public safety departments and motorists are aware of this. “We’re not charging any money for this, it’s only to get the word out,” said event coordinator Lysne Tait.

Massive EL Recycling Opportunity May 30

The big, annual East Lansing recycling event, known now as “Recycle! East Lansing,” will take place this year on Saturday, May 30. Formerly known as “Project Pride,” this event provides opportunities to dispose of lots of common household items in a relatively environmentally-responsible fashion. Items that are in good condition may be reused, and the rest will be recycled to the extent possible.
