The East Lansing Board of Education is poised to approve a motion to reopen Red Cedar Elementary School as a preschool – grade 5 STEAM school at their regular monthly meeting tonight (7 p.m. Monday Dec. 14)

The board’s Committee for Educational Programming has been meeting since October to discuss “initiating innovative educational programming at Red Cedar and Donley Elementary Schools.”

Rally for Peace to Take Place December 15 in East Lansing

Many East Lansing residents reacted negatively to Presidential candidate Donald Trump’s recent appeal to forbid the entrance of Muslims into the country. This reaction led to the creation of The Rally for Peace which was organized by members of the Greater Lansing Network Against War and Injustice (GLNAWI) and others in the community.

One of the community members who has taken a stand is Donna Rich Kaplowitz, an assistant professor at the Residential College in the Arts and Humanities at Michigan State University.

Developer of White Oak Place Lowers TIF Ask, Changes Site Plan

East Lansing’s Downtown Development Authority (DDA) Project and Infrastructure subcommittee met this Tuesday to hear revised plans for White Oak Place, a project planned for the northeast corner of Grand River Avenue and Spartan Avenue. The developer presented a new Brownfield plan lowering the tax increment financing (TIF) ask from $9.5 million to about $6 million. The developer also provided a revised site plan.

Representative Lee Chatfield, Chair of the Michigan House Local Government Committee, announced at yesterday’s meeting of that committee that, following a conversation with East Lansing Mayor Mark Meadows, he had decided to defer action on HB 5041. If passed into law, the bill would allow East Lansing landlords to make certain kinds of improvements to nonconforming rental properties that are not allowed by current East Lansing ordinances.

Last night, the Ingham County Board of Commissioners heard Alice Dreger’s appeal under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). As Publisher of ELi, Dreger has been requesting records of all communications between County Clerk Barb Byrum and “the person who called himself or herself ‘Steve Meadows’.”

City Garage Under Marriott May Be Closed, Sold

East Lansing’s City Council heard from City staff last night about various options for dealing with the City-owned parking garage and land under the Marriott Hotel downtown. Investors have expressed some interest in purchasing the garage and/or the land under the whole “University Place” complex, a parking garage and land which the City currently owns.

Armed Robbery at Pizza Hut

The East Lansing Police Department (ELPD) reported tonight that there was an armed robbery at Pizza Hut near the intersection of Grand River Avenue and Hagadorn Road at 8:45 p.m. tonight.

According to ELPD Chief Jeff Murphy, no one was injured in the robbery. He tells ELi that the ELPD is using a tracking dog as well as officers to try to track the suspect.

More than $112,000 was spent in total by the candidates in the very costly November election for East Lansing City Council, according to post-election financial statements filed last week. And this amount does not include the cost of unprecedented involvement in an East Lansing election by the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Saturday night was a big win for the Michigan State Spartans, but not all students ended the evening on a positive note. Eight students were arrested in Cedar Village for alcohol-related violations after students flooded the streets and lit couches on fire to celebrate the Big Ten Championship victory.

ELPD’s Lt. Wriggelsworth said thirteen fires took place Saturday night after the game. The fires occurred in predominantly student-rental areas of East Lansing, including Cedar Village as well as North Harrison.
