2.0 Maker Studio Opening Today at East Lansing Marriott

Today marks the beginning of a new chapter in the creative life of East Lansing, as East Lansing Public Library (ELPL)’s 2.0 Maker Studio celebrates its Grand Opening from 4-6 pm. The space is located on the second floor of the East Lansing Marriott at University Place. According to Ripple Public Relations’ Tali Hylen, “the communal space includes 7 rooms providing tools, supplies, computers and software that allow community members to design, prototype and create manufactured works in a collaborative space, sharing resources and knowledge.”
 

Keys In The Cities – Public Pianos

The Capital Area Blues Society, led by board member Larry Grudt, is developing a project that will place artistically decorated pianos in public spaces around East Lansing and Lansing. The project proposes to bring used pianos, local artists, business merchants, and the community together in a spontaneous, unique and entertaining manner. Donated pianos in working condition will be paired with local artists who will decorate them.

Monthly Community Sing Open to Everyone

If you love to sing, and are looking for a community of like-minded people, check out the Monday Night Community Sing, held on the first Monday of most months at the Unitarian Universalist Church in East Lansing. The singing is neither church choir nor karaoke, but a casual, comfortable gathering offering about 90 minutes of song. The next Sing will take place on Monday, October 6.

The best East Lansing viewing of Uranus will be in the week before and after October 7, when Uranus will be in opposition to the sun. Opposition refers to when two bodies are on opposite sides of the viewer. The coming opposition will place Uranus and the sun on opposite sides of East Lansing. The sun’s light will stream past Earth, bounce off Uranus, and come back to East Lansing.

East Lansing Quidditch Season Underway

The much-anticipated Quidditch preseason is now underway with regular after-school intra-squad scrimmages taking place at Patriarche Park. Players from East Lansing High School meet after school to break into two teams, pitting the Goslings against the Narwhals. Ordinarily, practice occurs on Friday afternoons, but because so many of the players belong to the marching band and this Friday was the MSU Homecoming game, practice this week took place on Thursday.

New Yard Sign Campaign Questions BWL’s Right to Cut

East Lansing residents are seeing fewer tree trimming crews out working for Lansing’s Board of Water and Light (BWL), the major provider of electricity to East Lansing. But tensions remain very high between BWL and homeowners. Some homeowners who have already experienced damage to their properties from trimmer crews are being offered compensation by BWL. Others, worried about future damage, have joined a new yard sign campaign.

The East Lansing Band and Orchestra Parent Association will hold its annual car wash tomorrow, Saturday, September 27 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at MacDonald Middle School. Suggested donation is $10 per car wash but any level of donation is welcome. Band and Orchestra students will also be out in the community on Sunday, September 28 from 4:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. playing door- to-door for donations in East Lansing neighborhoods.

The community of East Lansing will have the chance to enjoy some impromptu, “surprise” concert venues within their own homes and lawns this coming Sunday, September 28, 2014. For four hours during their annual “Night Out” Fundraiser, groups of four to five East Lansing High School (ELHS) orchestra or band students will join parent volunteers as they “carol” at various homes in the area, providing entertainment and asking for donations to the ELHS music program. 

Brownfield Redevelopment Authority Approves Trowbridge Developer’s Request

The Brownfield Redevelopment Authority (BRA) voted at its meeting on September 25 to favorably recommend to the City Council a second amendment to the Tax Increment Financing (TIF) plan requested by River Caddis Development for the Trowbridge Road development that is underway.
 

Fall Color Tour by Train

The Steam Railroading Institute (SRI) of Owosso is offering a unique and relaxing way to see the fall colors of the Lower Peninsula: an all-day train tour. The SRI will be hosting a series of trips: October 4, round-trip from Cadillac to Boyne Fall; October 11, round-trip from Petoskey to Fife Lake; and October 18, round-trip from Mount Pleasant to Cadillac. The series’ migration south over October ensures great colors on each tour.

On Saturday, October 11, and Sunday, October 12, Friends of the East Lansing Public Library will hold its annual Fall Used Book Sale. Proceeds from the sale are used to buy materials that exceed the Library's regular budget, including books, computers, furniture, music, and programming.
